    A. Fill in the blanks:

    1. A set of instructions that perform a particular task is called a software

    2. Mnemonic Codes are the short words used for a lengthy set of information.

    3. The Bootstrap loader reside in the computer’s ROM.

    4.  In assembly language mnemonic codes are used to developed programs.

    5. Visual C++ is a high level language.

    6. Database services of the operating system allow a user to create, manage and query databases.

    7. The input to the compiler is called source program and the output is called object program.

    8. A machine language uses binary numbers.

    9. The user interface can be (CUI) or (GUI).

    10. The operating system can be Single user or multi user.

    11. The BIOS can be accessed by pressing the Del key or F2 key on the keyboard.

    12. If the Power-On Self-Test is successful, it passes control to the system’s bootstrap loader.

    B. True or False:

    1. The computer stores data in ROM temporarily. False

    2. A high level language programmer writes programs in machine language. False

    3. Operating System allows us to create, save, open and edit Files. True

    4. An assembler converts an assembly language program into machine language. True

    5. When a computer is switched on, first of all it performs POST. True

    6. High level language is also known as problem-oriented language. True

    7. Bootstrap loader is a small program. True

    8. Interpreter translates and execute a source program line by line. True

    9. An operating system functions as an executive or supervisor. True

    10. Low level language is a machine dependent language. True

    C. Answer the following:

    1. What do you understand by computer language?

Computer language is a means of communication that allow us to give instruction or exchange information to a computer. With it help, a programmer tells the computer what he wants to do in a language the computer understand.

    2. Name some popular software packages.

Some of the popular software packages are :

Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc

    3. Explain the process of booting up of a computer.

Booting up of computer is the process of powering it on and starting the operating system. This section will identify the step in the boot process. Usually, you will not need to know to much about this process. You will Power On your machine, and in few minutes your computer will executes the software that load and start the computer operating system and prepare it for use.

    4. What is an operating system? Why it is necessary?

Operating System is a master control program that runs the computer or we can say it is a program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer.

It is necessary because no computer can work without operating system. It is the most important part of the computer system, That tells the computer how to use its own components and also act as an interface between the computer and the user. All the application software also run on top of the operating system and no computer can function without it.

    5. What do you understand by Low level Language?

Low level language is a machine dependent language which offer few control instruction and data types. Each statement in a program written in a Low Level language usually corresponds to one machine instruction.

    6. How computer perform all the processing? Explain the three Cs.

The computer perform all the processing by ‘calculating’, ‘comparing’, and ‘copying’ the data stored in its memory RAM.

Calculate :- The computer can perform any mathematical operation on data by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing one set with another.

Compare:- The computer can analyses and evaluate data by matching it with sets of known data that is include in the program or taken from the storage.

Copy:- The computer can move the data to create any type of report or listing in any order.

    7. What do you mean by APM?

Application and Process Management (APM) is an integral part of any modern day operating system which keep track of all active processes, allocates resources to them, execute them according to their priorities, free resources once the process is over and manages transaction control so that various applications do not interfere with each other’s execution.

    8. What do you mean by FMS?

File Management services is required to organize the file and give user access to them. File management system govern user interaction with the file and can restrict access when required. In addition to functions of the user interface they can carry out security function in the background automatically.
